Life Hack : 4 Tips no one tells you about starting your capsule wardrobe.

Right after my wedding last year, I decided to finally take the plunge and switch to a capsule wardrobe instead of “having nothing to wear” with a full closet (we’ve all been there). Below you can read my 4 pro-tips on getting your capsule wardrobe started (I promise no strings attached, you will have all of these items in your closet) and a bit further you can read how I actually tested my wardrobe out.

OK let’s get some things sorted out first. Honestly What is a capsule wardrobe? Basically wearing very few, simple pieces that compliment each other. Normally a capsule or “minimalist” wardrobe consists of 20 or fewer pieces.

Tip #1 Don’t read any other articles saying you “need to buy this” or “need to purchase my…” etc. because trust me you already have these items in your closet.
Tip #2 If you aren’t ready to take the plunge. Just place all of your clothes into garbage bags and store them away. Try it for a month or five days like I did and see if you actually need those items back.

OK let’s get started. What you’re actually here for – what’s in my capsule wardrobe?

  • 4 Pairs of Pants: Dark wash, light washed, black and a fun color (I love my sassy red and mustard pants)
  • 3 Shirts: A white t-shirt, a black t-shirt and a stripped top
  • 3 Cardigans: Grey, black and white
  • 2 Scarves: White and a fun print (you may not know this about me, but I’m in love with anything and everything leopard print)
  • 3 Button up Tops: Dark denim, light demon and a white denim button up top.
  • 1 Jean Jacket
  • 1 Jean knee-length dress or a fun printed dress

**Of course all of these items do change out depending on the season

Test it out. Dump all of your clothes (except your capsule wardrobe) into bags and store them. Try it for a week and see how you like it, no strings attached. For me? I decided to do this during one of my busiest work weeks at work; five full days of back to back meetings, walk troughs and conferences. Read below to see how my five days went!

DAY #1 : Stripped top, Jean jacket and cute mustard pants. I pulled the look together with this bold blue necklace and brown shoes. Perfect for a day filled with meetings and comfortable enough to sit at my desk all day.

DAY #2: White t-shirt, light denim button up and black jeans. I pulled this look off with brown shoes and my hair pulled up into a pony tail. Comfortable and still super cute!

DAY #3: Black t-shirt and light denim jeans. I added my leopard print scarf and cute nude/blush colored flats. At this point I’m still I love with my wardrobe. It’s getting a lot easier to get dressed in the morning.

Tip #5: Both my brown and blush flats come from Target. For $10 these babies last me all year and are EXTREMELY comfortable.

DAY #4: re-wearing my black jeans, pairs with a dark denim button up and white cardigan. I also paired this with cute leopard print loafers. Still super happy with my looks and we are over half way done!

DAY #5: A white button up layered with a grey cardigan and dark denim jeans. I’m also wearing pointy sparkly flats 😍

Five full days of work and I was honestly shocked. I was able to get ready faster in the morning with less of the “I have nothing to wear – the world is ending” stress. I’m much more comfortable sitting in my office too, t-shirts and jeans are now my go-to and I honestly STILL look “put together.”

What I learned? I already had all of these clothes in my closet. I can save my time and money by just being creative with what I have. I honestly did not even notice those bags of clothes I tossed in the corner.

(I sold and donated the bags a few months later)

Even now a year later, I am still using my capsule wardrobe. I add in long sleeve t-shirts for fall and winter but I keep my wardrobe the same throughout the year. Simple go-to outfits. I’m comfortable in my clothing now and I have plenty of time in the morning to get my life together. It sounds cliche, but I honestly have more time to lead a healthy lifestyle and spend with my family now that I don’t have to worry about what I’m wearing. (You can see all of the stuff I can get done in the morning now in this article #LADYBOSS)

If you are curious, I did purchase (and still do) all of my capsule wardrobe items from Old Navy. I scope out the season sales and stock up on my basics. My Pro Tip: Sign up for their text messages, they will send you a quick note during the weekends when they have special flash sales for the basics (jeans/t-shirts). I also purchase all of my FAVE necklaces for super cheap ($1 or less) off of WISH. That cute blue necklace I am wearing on Day #1…. $1. SERIOUSLY.

Have you ever tried it a capsule wardrobe? What did you add or remove from the list? I’d like to hear from you below!
